DAY OF PRAYER AND FAST THIS FRIDAY 27 MARCH, 2015

The Joint Trade Union Movement (JTUM) after holding our Demonstration yesterday in front of the Parliament has decided to host a day of Prayer and Fast on Friday 27 March, 2015from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the Brian Lara Promenade, Port of Spain. We invite members of the public to come and prayer with us any time between 6 a.m. and 6p.m. A special prayer service will take place at midday with another service to close the day at 6 p.m. We are calling on members of the public who cannot be physically on the Promenade to take a moment at 12 noon to say a prayer for our country.

We have taken this decision in light of the poor level of governance which has manifested itself in the complete breakdown of our democratic institutions, unbridled attack on trade unions and other peoples’ organizations and the unprecedented levels of corruption, all of which are wreaking havoc on the lives of the majority of citizens.

Recent revelations concerning the former Attorney General and T&TEC and the recent calls for the Minister of Energy to be removed for his role in the NGC Scandal are just some of the recent examples of a complete collapse of governance.

Here are just some other examples of unprecedented poor governance:-

  • -Rishmi Ramnarine

  • -NP Gopaul Scandal

  • -Section 34

  • -Emailgate

  • -Prisongate

  • -NGC billion dollar Waste Water Project

  • -False Papers

  • -Life Sport Programme

  • -Debe to Mon Desir Highway

  • -The fall of the AG

  • -Witness tampering

  • -Bribery & Buy Out

  • -Corruption in every state institution

  • -Any many more allegations of corruption

All of this denies citizens their fair share of the country’s resources and a decent standard of living.

We also pray for the immediate settlement of all outstanding negotiations. The following are some of the long outstanding negotiations that the government is refusing to settle:-

  • OWTU: PETROTRIN, T&TEC, POWERGEN, NP, UWI, UTTAND NTA

  • CWU: TSTT(2011-2013) -TSTT WORKERS STILL ON 2007 SALARIES, HILTON AND NMASSYTECHNOLOGIES

  • BIGWU: TTMF(2009-2012), FCB (2012-2014), CARIRI (2011-2013), EXIMBANK, CIPRIANI(STILL UNDER THE 5% CAP), SWMCOL, EMA, Export TT

  • PWUTT: TT Post (2011-2013)& NON-IMPLEMENTATION OF THE JOB EVALUATION

  • Daily Paid Workers: Negotiations for 2014-2016 PERIOD HAS NOT STARTED, JOB EVALUATION - GOING ONSINCE 2005

  • POA, FSA II, PSWA(PRISON OFFICERS, FIRE OFFICERS, POLICE OFFICERS): CPO UNDERMINING THE MARKETSHIFT AND REFUSE TO SETTLE

  • TIWU: MTS

It is with all the above in mind that the JTUM has called for a Day of Prayer and Fast on Friday 27 March, 2015on the Brian Lara Promenade starting at 6 a.m.
