    What's new is that the People Partnership Government has promised to put new Public Procurement laws in place to reduce all those ways in which tax-payers' money is stolen or wasted.

    For OWTU members and specially invited guests , the opening ceremony begins at 5pm on Friday 22nd July 2011. Guests are asked to be seated at 4:45pm. The feature speaker will be Roget Toussaint, long time activist, labour leader, former President of the militant Transport Workers Union (TWU), Local 100 in New York, and now International Vice President of the TWU.

    Hundreds of delegates from various units of the union willl continue to the Working Session on Saturday 24th July 2011.

  • CLR James Memorial Lecture by Professor Norman Girvan

    Come hear a great Caribbean analyst and thinker deliver this year's CLR James Memorial Lecture on the "Existential Threats in the Caribbean : Democratising Politics, Regionalisng Governance".

    Norman Girvan is Professor Emeritus of the University of the West Indies . Until recently he was Professorial Research Fellow at the UWI Graduate Institute of International Relations. He has been Secretary General of the Association of Caribbean States, Professor of Development Studies and Director of the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies at the University of the West Indies , and head of the National Planning Agency of the Government of Jamaica.

    Thursday, May 12, 2011at 7pm at C.L.R. James Auditorium at the Cipriani College of Labour and Co-operative Studies, Valsayn.

    Calling ALL Workers!!! On Monday 2nd May 2011, we march in solidarity with workers across the world to commemorate May Day, also know as International Workers' Day. We assemble at OWTU Paramount Bldg at 8am and march through the streets of San Fernando. We end at Harris Promenade with solidarity greetings and messages from various leaders in the trade union movement.

  • LabourTech-T&T 2011: Communications Skills Training for Trade Unionists and Activists

    On Tuesday 19th and Wednesday 20th April, 2011, the Oilfields Workers' Trade Union will host, for the first time ever, LabourTech-Trinidad and Tobago. A first not only for the OWTU but also for Trinidad and Tobago. Inspired by LaborTech 2010, held in December 2010 at the University of San Francisco, LabourTech-Trinidad and Tobago will focus on the fundamentals of five communications tools: Writing, Photos, Videos, Social Media (Facebook, Twitter), and Cell Phones.

    Coalition Culture, Coalition Politics and Coalition Governments in Trinidad and Tobago

    The Oilfields Workers’ Trade Union over the years has demonstrated its commitment to facilitating open discussion on issues of national interest.

     

    Given the current local political context, with the People’s Partnership Government being a coalition of five political parties including the Movement for Social Justice (MSJ) it is critical to have this discussion about coalition culture, politics and governments. The Forum will take the format of a panel discussion followed by open discussion.

     

    Our esteemed panelists will be: Sunity Maharaj, editor of the T&T Review and renowned local journalist; Lennox Sankersingh, attorney-at-law and political activist; and Senator David Abdulah, General Secretary of the OWTU and President of FITUN. 

     

    We welcome your media house to this Breakfast Forum. Breakfast will be served at 7:30am and the panel discussion will begin at 8:00am. The cost per person of this activity is $40.00 and the cost for students with ID (e.g. Cipriani College, UWI, UTT) is $20.00, students in school uniform would be admitted free of charge. Media (with ID) will also be admitted free of charge.

  • WOMEN & LABOUR- Honouring Women's Contributions, Struggles and Leadership

    In commemoration of International Women's Day (March 8th), the OWTU is collaborating with the National Union for Domestic Employees (NUDE) to further raise the public's consciousness and deepen our collective understanding of the struggles of women who work in factories, homes, retail outlets, manufacturing and other so-called forgotten spaces. The event will also highlight the many contributions of women who have worked to advance the rights of women and men in the workplace through women's activism and leadership.

    The evening will end with refreshments, socializing and a DJ dance party.

    All are welcome.
